Pauline Yu: “Of Storms, Frontiers, and Master Plans: Claims for the Future of Higher Education”


Pauline Yu presented her lecture as part of the Townsend Center for the Humanities’ Forum on the Humanities and the Public World. Yu has been President of the American Council of Learned Societies since July 2003. She has previously served as Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures and Dean of Humanities in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. Professor Yu has written numerous books and articles on classical Chinese poetry, comparative literature, and issues in the humanities.

Classic College Meets Online Education: Whither the Future of Higher Education


In this Askwith Forum from March 11, two university presidents present two quite different views of the future of learning. William J. Pepicello, president of the University of Phoenix, and Christopher B. Nelson, president of St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, discuss their contrasting conceptions of higher education. The University of Phoenix, the countrys largest private university, intensively promotes distance education and a for-profit university model, while St. Johns is the canonical example of a great books, liberal arts, residential college.

Past Skills for future Generations (Shortened)


Past Skills for Future Generations was developed to address a national shortage of people who are trained in traditional skills in the heritage sector. The project was based at Luton Hoo Walled Garden and other local historic conservation sites, across Luton and Bedfordshire. Over two years a small group of young people aged 11 – 16 who were receiving alternative education provision, under the care of Luton Borough Council, worked with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) and English Heritage to develop accredited skills in conservation, horticulture and heritage craft skills.
